24th - 28th of September 2018
Guide: Inga Fanney
5 day trail and mountain running in the picturesque Faroes Islands in spring.
The Faroe Islands is presented as "Readers Choice" on National Geographic Travelers "Best of the world 2015" list over destinations you must-see in 2016.
Faroes Islands are unspoiled, unexplored and unbelievable destination for all trail runners who enjoy running up hills and mountains, along cliffs and through small fishing villages. Among places visited is Gásadalur, a small picturesque village which offers unparalelled view of the fjord and the surrounding islets. Until recently the only way to get to charming Gásadalur was on foot from another village and over the mountain.
Fell running up the Slættaratindur, the highest mountain in the Faroe Islands (882m), we get a grand view of the Faroese archipelago. From here we get a good view over surrounding mountains and islands and the whole of Eysturoy (eastern island).
Accommodation in hotels and introduction to the city life of Tórshavn, the capital of the Faroe Islands.
Running of 12-25 km each day.
Day 1: Arrival at Vágar airport and transfer to one of Faroes picturesque lakes, Sørvogsvatn. We run along the lake to the cliffs, where a river from the lake falls in a waterfall into the sea. After our run we get a transfer to our hotel in Tórshavn.
Distance: 12-15 km
Day 2: Depart Tórshavn at 9:00 and drive to the island of Eysturoy. We start the morning with visiting the village of Gjógv, named after the 200m long sea-filled canyon that runs north to the sea from the town. This is also where our run starts. We aim for getting up to the plateau, climbing several hills on the way. On a clear day the view from the peaks can be breathtaking, with view over the legendary rocks of Risin and Kerlingin which rise 75m high from the sea. Drive back to Tórshavn.
Distance: 20-25 km
Day 3: Pick up at our hotel in Tórshavn after breakfast. Drive to the island of Vågar where we visit the very picturesque village of Gásadalur. Gásadalur is located by a cliff but also surrounded by the tallest mountains on the island. The mountains isolated the village, so to get from the village you had to go up 400m on foot to a mountain pass or find a way to get from the cliff to a boat in the sea, so little by little the population has become smaller and smaller. A tunnel was made in 2004 to connect the village to the road system so now it is accessible by cars as well.
We neither use the tunnel though nor the road, but go the old postman route and up the mountains. Transfer back to Tórshavn.
Distance: 15-20 km
Day 4: Depart Tórshavn in the morning and drive further north on this biggest island of the Faroes, Streymoy. We visit the town of Saksun, which lies in the bottom of what used to be an inlet of the sea, surrounded by high mountains. The inlet formed a good deep natural harbour, until a storm blocked it with sand. The old harbour became an unaccessible seawater lagoon, only accessible by small boats on high tide. From Saksun we go up to the mountains and over to the town of Tjørnuvík, also referred to as surfers paradise. From there we go to very impressive cliffs making our way back to the town of Saksun. Transfer back to Tórshavn.
Distance: 20-25 km
Day 5: Early morning transfer to the airport for our flight back.
